Aosta
in summer
Longer days, the sun high in the blue sky and the green of the mountains as a backdrop: summer in the Aosta Valley is definitely ideal for outdoor activities, and if you prefer to stay in town, Aosta offers a wealth of opportunities for everyone.
During the summer, the historic centre of Aosta is transformed into a large square, with the terraces of bars and restaurants bringing a lively touch of colour to the streets, open-air events and all the charm of the Roman neighbourhood.
The summer season calls for long, rejuvenating walks and whole days spent in the sun. To enjoy these activities, all you have to do is leave the Old Town and head south. Once past the train station and shortly after the bridge connecting Aosta with Charvensod, you’ll find the cycle/pedestrian path that runs between Sarre and Fénis. From there, all that remains is to choose which direction to take: west, towards the green area of Gressan, or east, to Pollein or to the Les Îles di Brissogne nature reserve. A flat route suitable for everyone, immersed in the greenery and the half-light, accompanied by the relaxing sound of the Dora Baltea and the air cooled by its waters.
Those who prefer something more evocative - but also more challenging - can choose to venture into one of the side valleys for a hike to one or more of the many refuges scattered throughout the Aosta Valley, or to discover breath-taking views sitting on the edge of a small lake. For those who prefer cycling to walking, there are several rentals in Aosta that can recommend the right bike for every need: from cycle tours to just pedalling through the centre on e-bikes, or exciting descents along downhill tracks, there is something for all tastes.
Summer is the season for the now customary appointment with Musicastelle Outdoor, a yearly event that features the voices of the top Italian and international artists in sets created in fabulous locations, offering a combination that will delight the eyes and ears and remain in the hearts of minds of participants forever.
Still on the subject of culture, but remaining in the Old Town, summer in Aosta is the perfect time to discover the city and the opportunities it has to offer, perhaps starting from the Saint-Martin-de-Corléans Archaeological Park, which takes visitors on a journey through time, spanning thousands of years. Alternatively, you might like to visit the Regional Archaeological Museum in Piazza Roncas, or the amazing open-air museum that is the city of Aosta, with its marvels from the Roman age scattered throughout the ancient Augusta Prætoria, such as the theatre or the cryptoporticus. All this, of course, in the run-up to major events such as GiocAosta and, above all, the Foire d'été, “younger sister” of the more famous Sant'Orso Fair, which every summer brings colour to the centre with games, crafts and traditional activities.
When the sun goes down and the evening air becomes cooler, it’s time for an aperitif in Aosta. There is plenty to choose from for those winding down from a hiking trip or waiting to taste the typical local products at dinner: wine bars and wine shops, with their wide selection of wines from the Aosta Valley and further afield, bars and pubs with music and buffets, and quiet, cosy outdoor terraces, many of them offering splendid views of the magnificent historical and cultural heritage the city has to offer. Having a drink before or after dinner is always a unique experience.
