in autumn
Autumn is undoubtedly the season of a thousand colours. At this time of year, with days getting shorter and temperatures falling, the nature around us begins its transformation, in anticipation of its winter rest. And autumn is the season in which, as the last of the long sunny days give way to hot drinks, everything around us is filled with intense colours: from the woods surrounding the city to the vineyards more or less perched on the sides of the mountains. There are many events and activities that can make a stay in Aosta incredible, even in the season of falling leaves. Indeed, it’s at the end of summer that the cultural and gastronomic events begin, with the start of the Saison Culturelle, the “home of culture” that every year plays host to shows and concerts featuring both Italian and international artists.
No less important are the food and wine festivals: from the apple festival in Gressan to the cross-border "Lo Pan Ner" festival dedicated to rye bread, or the grape festival and the countless chestnut festivals in the municipalities of the Valley, all within easy reach of Aosta, you'll be spoilt for choice. Setting aside a day of your holiday to enjoy one of the many festivals and fairs in the area is undoubtedly the best way to get to know and appreciate not only the landscape and the attractions of the Aosta Valley, but also its genuine flavours, culture and traditions. As the summer heat begins to give way to milder temperatures, from September onwards, a visit to the castles of the Aosta Valley becomes more even more pleasant. With a tour of the fortresses and a food and wine festival, it is interesting to discover traditional events such as the désarpa, a festive occasion typical of our valleys that celebrates the return of the herds to the stables after the summer spent on the mountain pastures, the most famous of which is the one in Valtournenche.
Located at the bottom of the valley and central to the region, Aosta is the ideal place to explore mountain routes on foot or by bike, for a food and wine tour or, as mentioned, to discover one or more of the many events of the autumn season. At the same time, however, the less sultry temperatures of late summer can still offer evenings suitable for an open-air aperitif in one of the city centre's wine bars, and above all, a cultural city tour. Starting from the famous archaeological park of Saint-Martin de Corléans, a fascinating history leads visitors along a route featuring evocative, iconic monuments, such as the Roman theatre, via the Porta Praetoria gate or the Arch of Augustus, or more hidden locations well worth exploring, such as the Cryptoporticus, the Leper's Tower, the Roman bridge, or the cloister of Sant'Orso. Along the way, the pieces of history of the past come together and merge with the Aosta of today, for a fascinating holiday.
