Pila: sports
and fun outdoors
Pila, both in winter and summer, Pila is synonymous with sport and outdoor fun.
Not just skiing, with a range of activities on offer, also for families with children.
Pila is a village in the municipality of Gressan, on the right side of the Dora Baltea river, effectively connected to the city of Aosta. A modern, scenic cableway connects the centre of Aosta to the snows of Pila in just 17 minutes.
Pila is the ski resort of the people of Aosta, with its 70 km of perfectly groomed slopes, which increase in difficulty right up to the ‘walls’ of the black runs.
Pila offers numerous hiking and biking paths of varying difficulty. In summer, it’s a mountain biker’s paradise, and has also become a popular destination for high-level competitions, thanks to its breath-taking downhill tracks.
Visitors can also enjoy horse riding, free climbing, paragliding for thrill-seekers and an adventure park, all surrounded by nature and with a 180° view of the Alps, from Mont Blanc to the Grand Combin, as well as the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa.
Reaching Pila is easy. You can drive from Aosta along the SR 18 road past Gressan, which takes about half an hour, or you can leave your car in the free, reserved car park of the cable car station, sit back and enjoy the view and in 17 minutes you will be at an altitude of over 1800 metres. (Tickets cost €7 return; €5 for children under 14).

Once there, one of the easiest walks is the one that leads to Lake Chamolé, at an altitude of 2311 metres. There are two options: either take path 14 from Pila to reach the lake in an hour and a half, or take path 19c and reach your destination with the Chamolé chairlift, which is equipped to carry bicycles (ticket cost €11 return; €8 for children under 14 and free for children under 8) pila.it/corse-singole. When you get off the chairlift, just follow the signs to find the right path. At the foot of Mario Stuffer's Christ, a bronze copy of the original, follow the path which leads to Lake Chamolé in about ten minutes. The path is flat and suitable for everyone. When you get to the lake, you can take a break, perhaps with a packed lunch prepared by one of the restaurants in Pila or by the Bar of the Chamolé chairlift; or if you want to continue - once you have recovered your strength with a short break - another hour's walk will take you to the Arbolle refuge, where you can have lunch, and from where you can admire the lake of the same name. Reservations are required for both lunch and overnight stays.
Returning to Pila in the afternoon, taking the reverse route, there is still some time left if you fancy trying out the adventure park, where fun is guaranteed, especially for children. At the Pila Adventure Park, immersed in nature, you can test your limits in complete safety, and adults and children (who must be at least 1.40 metres tall to try the simplest route, known as the squirrel route) can have fun crossing Tibetan bridges, walking across logs, cableways, and net bridges. There are 5 different routes, with different levels of difficulty, and 40 platforms. The squirrel, marmot and chamois routes take 20 minutes to complete, and the eagle and super eagle routes take 30 minutes each. It takes about 2 hours to complete all 5 routes.
Younger children will enjoy the summer FunPark, equipped with trampolines and inflatable structures and located at the entrance to the Adventure Park. For those who’d like to learn more about the town with the help of an expert, themed excursions with a nature guide are organised on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays throughout the summer. Wednesdays are dedicated to discovering the Pila basin and its alpine pastures, Wednesdays to discovering Lake Chamolé, the Champchenille alpine pasture and the Arbolle refuge, and Fridays to discovering mountain herbs and flowers for culinary, herbal, and cosmetic use.
